Photographic Stars of the Future Unleash Their Creative Energy

Bord Gáis Energy Launches Capture the Power Competition for Budding Student Photographers

Ireland Rugby captain Brian O’Driscoll posed for photographs today, March 8th 2009 with aspiring photographers of the future to launch the new Bord Gáis Energy Capture the Power photography competition for students of all ages across Irish primary and secondary schools.

The competition which will run for three weeks from 8th – 31st March encourages talented young photographers to capture unique moments as part of a national competition to select some of the brightest young stars in photography from all over the country. Entries are invited under three energy themed captions;

  1. Capture the Power in your Environment
  2. Capture the Power in the World Around You
  3. Capture the Power in Sport

Winners will be selected in each of the three categories with the overall winner selected to receive the honour of working as a VIP Photographer at a major Irish sporting event.

Launching the competition, Bord Gáis Chief Executive John Mullins said: “Energy is the word for our future generations and Bord Gáis Energy is delighted to be supporting this unique competition which encourages young students to use the passion they have for the environment and energy and bring it to life with photography.”

The overall prize winner will also receive a fantastic Canon EOS 450D Digital SLR Camera, a Nintendo Wii console and Wii Fit.  Other prizes available for all ages in the competition include a Canon EOS 1000D Digital Camera, and an Apple Ipod Touch.

For digital entries the maximum file size is 5MB and the suggested file types include JPEG, TIFF and PDF.

There are four age categories:

Primary School

Secondary Schools
5-9 year old 12-15 year old
10-13 year old 16-19 year old
The following must be included with every entry:
  • Your name
  • Your school’s name and contact number
  • Your teacher and principal’s name
  • Your age (at Jan 1st 2009)
  • A short written caption of no more than 50 words explaining the background to your photo
