June 6 is D-Day For Cork City Marathon 2011
Bord Gáis Energy confirms sponsorship for third year running

Cork Lord Mayor Cllr Michael O’Connell last night confirmed the Bord Gáis Energy Cork City Marathon will take place on June 6 next year and predicted a massive influx to the City for the Bank Holiday Weekend.

The announcement was made at a Civic Reception in City Hall for volunteers and sponsors, held to thank them for making this year’s event such a record success. At the event, Bord Gáis Eireann Chief Executive John Mullins confirmed that Bord Gáis Energy will continue to sponsor the race for 2011.

“Bord Gáis Energy is delighted to be the title sponsor of the Cork City Marathon for the third year and we are looking forward to a fantastic June Weekend in 2011. Every year the marathon has got bigger and better and it is now one of the major events on the National calendar.”

He added: “Bord Gáis Energy supports many community-based programmes including sponsorship of education initiatives, support for arts and culture, funding for charitable organisations and volunteerism. The Bord Gáis Energy Cork City Marathon contributes significantly to all of these social categories and is a fantastic opportunity to fund raise for charities, educate people on the benefits of regular exercise and celebrate all four corners of Cork City; showcasing the city to huge numbers of visitors from Ireland and abroad.”

The ‘marathon for everyone’ encourages individuals of all levels to get involved – from first timers to professional athletes, with the option of running the marathon as an individual or as part of a relay team made up of up to five people. Ireland's greatest athlete Sonia O'Sullivan gave Cork runners a unique opportunity yesterday to train with her for the upcoming Bord Gáis Energy Cork City Marathon. Over 50 runners of all levels and abilities were put through their paces at the session which took place at CIT. Sonia herself will be running the marathon for the first time this year as she aims to raise money for the Children's Leukaemia Association at the Mercy University Hospital.
