Resist the temptation to open the oven door when cooking too frequently as up to 20% of the heat escapes each time!+ Use lids on your saucepans to retain and speed heating. Plan to cook several items of food at one time in your oven using the different temperatures of the space, hotter on top, cooler below. Defrost and clean the inside of your fridge and freezer at least every 6 months and position them in a cool place so they can run more efficiently.

Check your fridge and freezers door seals - can the seals hold a €5 note in place when the door is closed? Cool hot food before putting it into your fridge or freezer as they have to work extra hard to chill it. Consider using slow cookers and pressure cookers as they save both energy and time while producing great food. When boiling your kettle, boil only the amount of water required instead of a full kettle each time.

In your washing machine use the lowest water temperature required and a full load where possible. When tumble-drying clothes dry heavy and light articles separately and turn the dryer off as soon as the clothes are dry. In good weather use an outdoor washing line to dry your clothes. Stop the dishwasher before the drying cycle and open the door to let the dishes air-dry.
