County Council recognised by Bord Gáis Energy for environmental policies.

Waterford County Council has been presented with a Green Certificate by Bord Gáis Energy, in recognition of its diligent environmental efforts through the purchase of green electricity. This is just the latest in a raft of awards that the local authority has received for its environmental policies and initiatives.

Bord Gáis Energy currently supplies electricity to over three hundred separate sites for Waterford County Council, with in excess of 90% of these sites being supplied with green electricity.

“Waterford County Council has shown great leadership by being one of the first local authorities in Ireland to voluntarily switch the vast majority of their sites to green electricity, a process which began in 2005,” said Gerry O’Sullivan, Key Account Manager, Bord Gáis Energy. “Not only did Waterford County Council make a sizeable reduction to their carbon footprint, but it also made significant savings on its energy costs by switching to Bord Gáis Energy,” he added.

Commenting at the presentation of the Green Certificate, Waterford County Mayor, Tom Higgins said: “In line with our ‘Climate Change Strategy’ which was launched last June by the Minister for the Environment, Heritage & Local Government, John Gormley, T.D., Waterford County Council continues to strive to reduce emissions in energy usage. We have set ourselves a target of being carbon neutral by 2012, and energy usage will play a big part in this process.  Working with leading energy experts like Bord Gáis Energy will have a positive impact on our ambitious plans.”
