Bord Gáis Energy U-21 Hurling Ambassadors Announced.

The 2009 Bord Gáis Energy GAA Hurling U-21 All-Ireland Championship was launched today (Monday, 25th May) at Croke Park, where competition sponsors Bord Gáis Energy unveiled a team of six ambassadors who will support an array of activity planned for the season ahead to promote hurling and the U-21 Championship.

The Bord Gáis Energy ambassadors are Portumna star Joe Canning (Galway), Ritchie Hogan (Kilkenny), Liam Rushe (Dublin), Patrick Horgan (Cork), Seamus Callinan (Tipperary) and Arron Graffin (Antrim). As Bord Gáis Energy ambassadors, they will be involved in a number of initiatives to be announced over the coming months, including the development of a hurling skills poster aimed at teaching children the basic skills of hurling and ambassador training sessions with under age teams across the country.

At the launch, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Criostóir Ó Cuana wished everyone connected with this year’s competition every success ahead of what is an eagerly awaited U-21 spectacle.

He said: “The U-21 grade is a hugely important one for us, especially in hurling. We need as many big, high profile games for hurling as we can get and the Bord Gáis Energy GAA U-21 Hurling Championship has not let us down in this regard in recent seasons.

“I look forward to another eventful campaign and thank Bord Gáis Energy for the imaginative and passionate support they have shown for a competition that aids and assists so many of our promising hurlers on their way to senior level.”

“Bord Gáis Energy is very proud to be continuing its sponsorship of the GAA Hurling U-21 All-Ireland Championship in 2009,” said David Bunworth, MD of Bord Gáis Energy. “The theme for the 2009 Bord Gáis Energy GAA Hurling U-21 All-Ireland Championship centres on ‘Breaking Through’ and this Championship is a vital platform for players hoping to ‘break through’ to senior level and counties hoping to make the vital ‘break through’ to All-Ireland glory.

“Similar to our sponsorship of the Bord Gáis Energy Ladies National Football League, our involvement with the GAA is about reaching communities and developing Gaelic Games in every county, giving players at all ages and in all disciplines every opportunity to participate in our national games.”

Cork legend and Bord Gáis Energy Sports Sponsorship Manager Ger Cunningham added;
“I would like to thank our ambassadors for the work they will be undertaking to support our aims and of course I wish them and all teams participating in this year’s Championship the very best of luck. We are lucky to have stars such as Joe Canning, Ritchie Hogan and Seamus Callinan on board and their status should be an inspiration to their peers.

“The U-21 grade is vital to a player’s development and we will be doing everything we can to promote this competition and the big games throughout what should be a wonderful summer of hurling.”

The Leinster U-21 Championship kicked off last Wednesday (20th May), when current All-Ireland Champions Kilkenny beat Laois to set up a semi final meeting with Offaly. This year, Kilkenny are aiming for their tenth All-Ireland title at U-21 level, while Dublin will be seeking their first in this competition, Galway and Tipperary will be looking for their ninth and Cork for their twelfth.
