As part of a major initiative to reduce energy costs and increase energy efficiency across the county, Donegal County Council has switched to Bord Gáis Energy for its electricity supply. The switch to Bord Gáis Energy, which includes the transfer of supply to 450 separate sites throughout Donegal, will result in significant annual savings for the local authority and will reduce their overall electricity costs by 10%.

Bord Gáis Energy was awarded the contract valued at approximately €1.5 million annually following a highly competitive tender process earlier this year.  This new contract win adds to what has already been a very successful year for Bord Gáis Energy as more and more businesses and consumers are making the switch to benefit from the associated savings. It also follows the recent announcement that over 200,000 residential customers have made the switch to Bord Gáis Energy for their electricity supply, far exceeding the initial targets at the outset of its ‘Big Switch’ campaign.

Commenting on the announcement, Michael McLoone, County Manager, Donegal County Council, said, ‘As part of our ongoing efforts to reduce our energy usage and more importantly our costs, we are working closely with Bord Gáis Energy and have carried out several energy audits which have highlighted areas where we can reduce our costs. This new supply contract with Bord Gáis Energy has the potential to save us €200,000 annually.’

Fergus Walsh, SME Sales Manager, Bord Gáis Energy, said, ‘Bord Gáis Energy is delighted to be working with Donegal County Council. Our entry into the residential electricity market earlier this year has created a groundswell of interest in our services, with Bord Gáis Energy now recognised as Ireland’s leading dual-fuel supplier. This strategic partnership has already resulted in several energy saving initiatives being introduced across the council’s 450 sites. The savings are significant and this is welcome news in the current economic climate.’
