As a big ‘thank you’ to the people of Ireland for making the Big Switch in such large numbers, Bord Gáis Energy is delighted to announce they are giving the gift of light to Dublin this Christmas. The company are the key sponsor of ‘The Big Switch On’ which marks the beginning of the city’s festive season, and will see the streets of Dublin illuminated with thousands of energy efficient LED* lights.

The lights, which will be officially switched on in three separate ceremonies* around the city later this month, will use a consistent colour palette of warm and pure white to link the city’s shopping streets in a spectacular unified festive display. To compliment the popular Grafton Street and Henry Street illuminations, new displays will be unveiled on Dublin’s Moore Street, Talbot Street, Drury Street, Capel Street and Cathedral Street.

Speaking about the sponsorship, David Bunworth, Managing Director, Bord Gáis Energy said, “The Christmas illuminations offer a further attraction for Dubliners and visitors coming into the city and for Dublin retailers this is really important in the current economic climate. We are delighted to be involved in the Christmas festivities and given the very successful year that we have had with the Big Switch campaign, we felt that it would be nice to give something back. Bord Gáis Energy is delighted to be working with the various organisations to bring a bit of magic to the city this year with The Big Switch On.”

As an additional thank you, Bord Gáis Energy has teamed up with Irish photo-sharing website Pix.ie inviting budding photographers to submit their favourite festive shots to the site. Bord Gáis Energy has committed to donate €10,000 worth of fuel vouchers to the Lord Mayor of Dublin Fund if the target of 500 festive images are uploaded to the Pix.ie website.

Richard Guiney from Dublin City Council BIDS (Business Improvement District Scheme) said, “We are grateful to Bord Gáis Energy for coming on board. The Christmas lights promise to look spectacular this year, and will add further to the sense of occasion Christmas brings to the city.”

The illuminations, which have been in planning with the retailers and Dublin BIDS since May, will be installed by MK Illuminations Ireland who are based in Cork. As leaders in their field, MK Illuminations lights up cities all over Europe including Vienna, Milan, Berlin and Paris.
