Bord Gáis Energy READISCOVER Your Local Library

Join in! Readiscover Your Local Library with Ireland’s Bestselling Authors...

March 1st – 31st 2011

Many of Ireland’s favourite authors have given generously of their time to invite people to READISCOVER just how great their local library is. Paul Howard, John Boyne, Sinead Moriarty, Roddy Doyle and Benji Bennett join Donal Óg Cusack, Karl Henry and Brent Pope during the Bord Gáis Energy READISCOVER Your Local Library campaign which this year takes place for the month of March.

Run in association with the public library service, the Bord Gáis Energy READISCOVER your local library initiative encourages people to think about all their library has to offer and the services they provide to all members of the community, whatever their age!

The fun starts in Ballincollig Library, Cork on March 1st with Donal Óg Cusack and will culminate on a high as Miriam O’Callaghan meets best selling author Roddy Doyle in the South County Library, Tallaght on 24th March.

Libraries around the country are celebrating the campaign with a wide range of activities including cookery demonstrations, author readings, book signings, writing workshops, opera workshops and much more. To find out what’s happening in your library, log onto

Did you know…. Some facts and figures about public libraries in Ireland

  • There are over 14.6 million visits to Irish public libraries each year
  • 15 million books are borrowed from public libraries each year , along with 2.5 million other items such as audio books, CDs and DVDs
  • There are 350 branch libraries and 31 mobile libraries which between them are open to the public for 10,350 hours a week
  • 97% of both full and part time libraries provide public access to the internet and together they provide 1.9 million internet sessions each year

Irene Gowing, sponsorship manager for Bord Gáis Energy said, “We are thrilled to work alongside the public library service on this great initiative. The libraries provide fantastic facilities to the local community and this campaign really is a celebration of the work that librarians all over Ireland do on a daily basis.”

Our thanks go to the authors who have given so generously of their time to attend library events throughout March, in part because of the affection they hold for the library service and the contribution they made to their careers,” she concluded.

Speaking about the initiative, Senator Mark Dearey, Chairman of the Library Council said, “We are delighted to work with Bord Gáis Energy again this year on this fantastic programme. Libraries all around the country are busier than even, and the READISCOVER month will celebrate all the great things they do throughout the year.”

He continued, “I want to congratulate all the library services for their participation in the READISCOVER Your Local Library month, and like them I hope the month will encourage even more people to visit their local library”.
