Final Hurdle for Counties in Search of Silverware

TG4 to broadcast three League Finals

03.05.11

The Bord Gáis Energy Ladies National Football League Division 1, 2 and 3 finals take place this Saturday as a televised triple header at Parnell Park.

In a repeat of the 1993 final, Laois face reigning champions Cork in the Division 1 final in the knowledge that the Rebelettes are going for a fourth title in a row.

Indeed this is Cork's eighth final appearance in succession, with 2004 and 2007 being the only blot on their impressive record during that time when Mayo beat them on both occasions. Laois won the Division 2 title in 2006, but this is a first Division 1 final appearance since 2003, where they beat Kerry. In their league encounter earlier in the year, Cork prevailed by 4 points.

In the Division 2 final All-Ireland champions Dublin take on Meath. The Jackies will be delighted with their quick return to Division 1, while Meath will look upon this as a chance to lay down a few markers ahead of the Leinster championship. When these sides last met, Dublin came out on top convincingly in Portmarnock.

Finally, the Division 3 final will be contested by Clare and Fermanagh. These sides finished tops of the table after the seven rounds of matches so it is fitting that they came through their semi-finals. Neither team will be overawed by the occasion either with recent Division 3 titles under their belts, 2007 for Fermanagh and 2006 for Clare, with the Banner county even adding a Division 2 title in 2008. Last time out they couldn't be separated and that draw was the only league points dropped by Clare all year.

All three finals will be televised live by TG4 from Parnell Park.

Pat Quill, president of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, said, "We are eagerly looking forward to great days entertainment in Parnell Park where we have a mixture of old rivalries and pairings that would not have competed against one another on a frequent basis. I thank Bord Gáis Energy for their sponsorship and the profile that they have given our National Leagues. I wish all participants well and whilst those who may be on the losing side will be disappointed, I hope that disappointment will be short lived as you prepare for the TG4 championships in the coming months. All counties have top exponents of Ladies Football and we look forward to entertaining encounters and displays of the skills of the game that has made Ladies Football such a popular sport."

Ger Cunningham, Sponsorship Manager for Bord Gáis Energy, commented, "As we reach the end of another wonderful season of League action, we are delighted to have once again been associated with Ladies Football as part of our ongoing support of Gaelic Games. To have the cream of Ladies Football showcased in the one venue and also live on TG4 is great exposure for the games and great for the players as well. I wish everyone involved in Saturday's games the very best of luck and I look forward to seeing some of them at the Bord Gáis Energy Teams of the League gala event at the end of the month."
