New partnership to target family homelessness launched

Bord Gáis Energy announces partnership with Focus Ireland. €1.2m committed to help end family homelessness.

Bord Gáis Energy has today announced a three year partnership with homeless charity, Focus Ireland. The energy company has committed a total of €1.2million to help in the fight against family homelessness in Ireland.

There are currently more than 600 families and 1,500 children homeless in Ireland and this number is growing at an alarming rate. Bord Gáis Energy’s funding will contribute to two new dedicated services within Focus Ireland; to provide support directly to families at risk, and a programme to raise awareness of the factors leading to family homelessness.

Commenting on the announcement, Eddy Collier, Chief Executive Officer with Bord Gáis Energy said, "The spectre of homelessness is increasingly real. The whole Bord Gáis Energy team is putting its weight behind financial and practical support to help families, even before they lose their homes, and that is why we are announcing today a multi-year partnership with Focus Ireland.  The work Focus Ireland does is exceptional, and we are delighted to be able to help them expand what they do for those most in need."

With the funding now fully committed and being paid in quarterly instalments the teams from Bord Gáis Energy and Focus Ireland are creating targets and programme areas that will provide both immediate and longer term support to end family homelessness.

Speaking about the partnership Ashley Balbirnie, Chief Executive of Focus Ireland said "Families are losing their homes in Ireland at a rate we’ve never seen. We need to act now to help families to find a home, and to stop more families becoming homeless. We are encouraged by the determination of Bord Gáis Energy to fund pioneering services, and by the commitment of the staff who will be giving their time and energy to help us reach into communities all over Ireland."
