Energy Allowance Information
The Gas and Electricity Allowances are part of the government's Household Benefits Package.
The Gas and Electricity Allowances are part of the government's Household Benefits Package. The allowance is €1.15 per day, which is then multiplied by the number of days in each of your billing cycles.
You do not have to be living alone to get the Household Benefits Package and the utility bills do not have to be in your name. However, only one person in a household can get the Package. You can get the Household Benefits Package if you are aged 70 or over. You do not need to be getting a State pension and the package is not means tested.
People under 70 can also get the HBP, but additional rules apply.
From 8 September 2025, new customers applying for the Household Benefits Package will have their Free Electricity Allowance (FEA) or Free Gas Allowance (FGA) paid directly to their nominated bank account or post office.
If you’re an existing Bord Gáis Energy customer and currently receive the allowance as a credit on your energy bill, this will continue unless you switch supplier.
