Frequently asked questions
Understanding dual fuel
What are dual fuel tariffs and how do they work?
Dual fuel tariffs combine your electricity and gas supply under one plan with a single energy provider. Instead of managing two separate suppliers, you get one account and one point of contact, which can simplify billing and support.
Will I get one electricity bill with a dual fuel plan?
No, you’ll still receive separate electricity and gas bills, but they’re available in one place — online or in our app — with one billing period, one login and one customer service team.
Can I stay with separate suppliers for gas and electricity?
Yes, but combining your fuels with one provider through a dual fuel contract can offer benefits like simpler billing, easier support and access to exclusive dual fuel discounts.
Are dual fuel deals always the cheapest option?
Not always. While some dual fuel prices include discounts for bundling, the cheapest deal for you depends on your energy usage, location, meter type and contract term. Comparing plans side by side helps you find the best fit. Note: Bord Gáis Energy consistently offers its best value discounted plans with dual fuel tariffs.
Can I use dual fuel plans with electric vehicles?
Yes. Some dual fuel tariffs include EV-friendly features like off-peak hours for charging at reduced rates. Our Smart EV Dual Fuel Discount plan is designed with electric vehicles in mind.
Making a decision
How can I find a cheaper deal for my home?
Compare unit rates, standing charges and any applicable discount periods. The cheapest deal may vary by electricity supply region, meter type and whether you’re eligible for smart plans or green energy deals.
What usage details do I need to compare plans?
When switching plans, it helps to know your annual consumption, average usage and current plan details. These figures can be found on recent bills or by checking your online account.
How do average household energy costs compare?
Based on average consumption figures (11,000 kWh gas and 4,200 kWh electricity per year), typical annual consumption can range from €2,000 to €2,500, depending on the plan and provider.
What’s included in a dual fuel discount?
A dual fuel discount typically reduces your electricity or gas charges when both are supplied by the same provider. Discounts may apply during a fixed discount period or across your full contract term.
Comparing and switching
What is a variable tariff and how does it work?
A variable tariff means your unit rates may change over time based on the market. These plans can offer flexibility, but your rates may rise or fall depending on the Irish energy market.
How do contract terms affect pricing?
Shorter contract terms may offer more flexibility, while longer ones may come with better rates or discounts. Always check if early exit fees apply before switching from your current plan.
How do energy suppliers calculate energy costs?
Energy costs are based on your usage (in kilowatt hours), the unit rates for electricity and gas, and daily standing charges. Some energy providers also factor in whether you’re using a variable rate plan or a fixed contract.
What’s the difference between energy suppliers and electricity suppliers?
An electricity supplier only provides electricity, while energy suppliers may offer both electricity and gas. Dual fuel energy providers, like Bord Gáis Energy, give you the option to combine both.
Billing and account management
Do I need to provide regular meter readings?
Yes. Regular or current meter readings help ensure your bills reflect actual energy usage, not estimates. Smart meters can automate this process, but manual readings are still needed for traditional meters.
Does paperless billing affect my plan?
Many energy suppliers offer incentives or small savings when you opt for paperless billing. It’s also a more sustainable way to manage your account.
What are standing charges and unit rates?
Standing charges are daily fixed fees for maintaining your connection, while unit rates are the price you pay per kilowatt hour of energy used. Both impact your final electricity and gas bills.
Energy use and efficiency
How is my energy usage measured?
Your energy usage is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). Most customers have either a regular meter or smart meter, and usage is tracked for both electricity and gas consumption.
How can I improve energy efficiency at home?
Simple actions like switching off unused appliances, using smart devices and improving insulation can increase energy efficiency. These changes support energy savings and help lower your carbon footprint.
Sustainability and green energy
Are there green energy deals available on dual fuel?
Yes. Bord Gáis Energy offers dual fuel options that include 100% renewable electricity and a portion of renewable gas. Choosing a green energy plan can help reduce your carbon footprint.
Where do renewable sources come from in green plans?
Our renewable electricity is backed by Guarantee of Origin certificates and comes from sources like wind, hydro and solar. Green gas includes biomethane and other low-carbon alternatives.
