Budget 2027: Know Your Power

New supports to help you take control of your energy

Budget 2027 brings new supports for households looking to lower their energy bills, use energy more efficiently and make the move to cleaner technologies. Whether you're thinking about solar panels, battery storage or a heat pump, there are now more ways to make your home work smarter for you.

Up to €1,800 grant toward solar panels

The Government has introduced a new €600 grant for home battery storage systems, helping eligible homeowners store more of the electricity they generate during the day and use it later when it's needed most. Better still, this is in addition to the existing Solar PV grant of up to €1,800, making solar and battery storage more affordable than ever.

Going Solar can save you up to 70%* on your electricity bill, plus, you can get up to €2,400 towards solar and battery storage** with these combined grants.

And with Bord Gáis Energy, getting started could be easier than you think. You can pay an upfront deposit of just €99, then spread the remaining cost over 2, 3 or 4 years with 0% finance from Finance Ireland, with no fees when payments are made on time***.

Up to €600 grant for home battery storage systems

A solar battery storage system lets you save the extra electricity your solar panels generate and use it later, like in the evenings or overnight. It’s a great option if your home uses more electricity than average; whether that’s charging an electric vehicle, running a heat pump or simply keeping up with busy evenings.

Batteries can be added to both new and existing solar systems. When paired with solar panels and a smart tariff, a battery gives you more control over how and when you use your energy.

Budget 2027 expands support for renewable energy technologies, making it easier for more households to lower their long-term energy costs. Our team of solar experts will help you choose the the right solar and battery package for your home.

New €2,000 boiler scrappage scheme

Budget 2027 includes a new €2,000 boiler scrappage grant for eligible homeowners who replace a fossil-fuel heating system with a heat pump or another renewable heating solution. The grant is in addition to existing heat pump supports, helping reduce the upfront cost of making the switch.

It's important to note that this grant is not available for a new gas boiler installation. The scheme is designed to help homeowners move away from fossil-fuel heating systems and transition to renewable heating technologies such as heat pumps.

Heat pumps can provide efficient, lower-carbon heating and hot water while helping support Ireland's transition to a cleaner energy future.

Vehicle Registration Tax relief for electric vehicles extended and €150 credit

As more homes adopt technologies such as solar panels, batteries and heat pumps, many customers are considering an electric vehicle as the next step towards a lower-carbon home.

And there's even more encouragement to make the switch. As part of Budget 2027, the Government announced that the Vehicle Registration Tax relief for electric vehicles, which was due to end on 31 December 2026, will now be extended for a further two years until the end of 2028. This continued support helps make electric vehicle ownership more accessible for more households.

And when you install an EV charger and switch to an eligible Bord Gáis Energy EV plan, you'll receive €150 credit on your electricity bill.

More support for your energy costs

Budget 2027 includes a range of measures designed to help households manage their energy costs.

Fuel Allowance increase
The Fuel Allowance will increase by €5 per week, helping eligible households with heating costs throughout the year. More than 460,000 households are expected to benefit. The means test for single pensioners was also improved, with the income limit increasing from €534 per week to €641 per week, allowing more older people to qualify. The Fuel Allowance is managed by the Department of Social Protection.

Lower carbon tax on natural gas
The carbon tax on natural gas will reduce from €63.50 to €48.50 per tonne of CO₂. This decrease will be applied to your gas bill from 14 October at a rate of €0.00877/kWh (ex. VAT). For a household with average annual gas consumption of 11,000 kWh, that's an annual saving of approximately €32.50.

*This figure is derived from combining typical Solar PV generation for a standard domestic 4–5kWp system with expected self-consumption levels (supported by historic ESB Networks irradiance data and customer usage patterns). Systems paired with a properly sized battery can regularly achieve up to 70% displacement of grid-imported electricity across the year.

**The maximum grant amount you can claim under the domestic solar PV scheme is €1,800. On top of this, you can also apply for a battery grant to the value of €600.
