Estimated Annual Bill (EAB)
The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) requires all electricity and gas suppliers to set out an “Estimated Annual Bill” figure for each of their offers. This figure indicates an estimated annual bill for that particular offer. It is based on CRU published average annual consumption figures and suppliers then apply their own price plans to calculate the EAB.
The EAB is based on:
- An average annual consumption figure of 11,000 kWh in gas (as published by the CRU)
- An average annual consumption figure of 4,200 kWh in electricity (as published by the CRU)
- All of the charges for each individual price plan (unit rate, standing charge, PSO levy (electricity only), carbon tax (gas only), VAT plus any other applicable charges)
- Any percentage discount applied to these price plans.
The EAB does not include:
- Cashback amounts or loyalty points
- The cost of any free giveaways e.g. a free boiler service or a free Hive.
BGE will often offer these additional items in your energy bundle, so it is important to take them into account when making your decision.
Average annual consumption
CRU has mandated that all suppliers use industry average annual consumption figures as published by them. Please note that your annual consumption may vary from these figures so your actual annual bill may be higher or lower than the EAB stated.
This may be particularly the case for customers on the Urban Domestic Day/Night Price Plan, Rural Domestic Day/Night Price Plan in Electricity and the Large Residential User Price Plans in Gas. Customers on these Price Plans typically use a larger amount than the average annual consumption figures. You must bear this in mind when looking at EAB figures.
For customers on electricity Nightsaver Tariffs, the EAB is calculated using a 62%/38% consumption split between day and night rates i.e., Day 2604 kWh and Night 1596 kWh.
EAB calculation examples:
Electricity - 24 hour
EAB = 4,200 kWh per annum x unit Rate - % discount on unit rate (where applicable)
+Standing charge per annum
+PSO levy per annum
+VAT at 9%
Electricity - Nightsaver
EAB = 2604 kWh x Day Unit Rate - % discount on Unit Rate (where applicable)
1596 kWh x Night Unit Rate - % discount on Unit Rate (where applicable)
+Standing charge per annum
+PSO levy per annum
+VAT at 9%
Gas
EAB = 11,000 kWh per annum x unit rate - % discount on unit rate (where applicable)
+Standing charge per annum
+Carbon tax per annum
+VAT at 9%
Electricity Smart Meter EAB
Electricity suppliers are required to display an EAB figure for all our available smart tariffs. All suppliers are required by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities to use the average annual consumption figure in electricity of 4200 kWh to calculate Estimated Annual Bill figures. Please note that for a tariff like our Electric Vehicle (EV) Tariff, your consumption is likely to be much higher - especially overnight when you charge your EV. Therefore, the EAB shown may not reflect your typical consumption.
Electricity Smart Meter – Standard Smart Tariff EAB
The Standard Smart Tariff has different prices at different times of the day i.e. “Day”, “Night” and “Peak”. Please see Our Tariffs & Prices | Bord Gáis Energy (bordgaisenergy.ie) for current prices for this tariff.
The way the consumption is allocated into Day, Night and Peak prices is required by the CRU for all electricity Suppliers’ Standard Smart Tariffs. The way consumption is required to be allocated is set out below:-
SST – Urban
Consumption Split: Day 52% i.e. 2184 kWh , Night 39% i.e. 1638 kWh, Peak 9% i.e. 378 kWh
SST – Rural
Consumption Split: Day 55% i.e. 2310 kWh, Night 34% i.e. 1428 kWh, Peak 11% i.e. 462 kWh
EAB calculation examples:
Electricity – Standard Smart Tariff – Urban
EAB = 2184 kWh x Day Unit Rate - % discount on Unit Rate (where applicable)
1638 kWh x Night Unit Rate - % discount on Unit Rate (where applicable)
378 kWh x Peak Unit Rate - % discount on Unit Rate (where applicable)
+Standing Charge per annum
+PSO levy per annum
+VAT at 9%
