How much will I save by upgrading my gas boiler?

Older gas boilers can be very inefficient, wasting valuable energy. While the initial investment of installing a new gas boiler might seem significant, the long-term cost savings make it a wise financial decision. Lower gas bills and reduced maintenance costs add up over time.

*The estimated savings figures were calculated based on improvements to boiler efficiency percentages using the SEDBUK (Seasonal Efficiency of a Domestic Boiler in the UK) rating system, which measures the efficiency of boilers under standardised conditions.

The calculation assumes that improving your boiler's efficiency directly reduces your annual gas bill proportionally. For example, a 35% efficiency improvement reduces gas usage and costs by 35%. Savings are calculated using the formula:

Savings (€) = Estimated annual gas bill (€1,482) × Efficiency improvement (%)

These figures are based on the estimated annual gas bill of €1,482 for Bord Gáis Energy customers (on our gas standard tariff with no discounts) and may vary depending on actual usage, boiler model, heating habits, your own tariff and external conditions. The SEDBUK ratings provide a standardised estimate and may not reflect real-world efficiency gains.

Key considerations

  1. Energy efficiency: Old or neglected boilers can lose more than 18% of the heat they produce.
  2. Model quality: We recommend and install Worcester Bosch or Baxi Boilers.
  3. Home size: Boiler size should match your home. Our expert engineers can recommend the best size for yours.

When should I replace my boiler?

If you’re frequently experiencing issues with your boiler, constantly requiring a boiler repair, you should consider if a boiler replacement is right for you.

Of course, regularly servicing your boiler should be enough to keep it running efficiently and maximise its life expectancy. But we understand, sometimes, it may be difficult to know when a simple repair or service will do the trick, or when you need to replace or upgrade your system.

So, here’s a list of signs that can help you decide if it’s time to put that old boiler to rest.

1. Based on SEAI BER assessment data where Mains Gas Boilers are on average 76% efficient in houses built before 2002, in houses which have a BER of D or below and where there is no thermostat linked to the boiler to control room temperature. This is when compared to a new high-efficiency boiler which has up to 94% efficiency. Annual savings figure is calculated based on an average annual consumption of 11,000 kWh in gas (as defined by the CRU) and Bord Gáis Energy's standard gas price plan.
