Understanding your smart electricity bill

Below is a guide to help you understand the different parts of your smart residential electricity bill.
Each numbered section is highlighted in the bill example.*

Your plan, meter details and current balance

  1. Account details
    Here you’ll find your bill address, account number, your plan name, and (if applicable) your contract end date.
    If you’re not currently in contract, a contract end date will not be shown.

  1. Meter information
    This section displays your meter number, MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number), and your meter configuration details (DG, MCC, and Profile codes).
    DG (Distribution Group) helps us understand your expected energy consumption.
    MCC (Meter Configuration Code) tells us the type of meter you have.
    Profile is used to predict your consumption pattern.

  1. Bill payment information
    This area shows your total amount due and the date your payment will be taken.
    If your account is in credit, the amount will display CR next to it.
    You’ll also see confirmation of your payment method here.

Your bill breakdown

  1. Your electricity usage and charges
    This section shows your billing period (from–to dates), and breaks down how your electricity was used and charged by time band (Day, Night, and Peak).
    It includes:
    Quantity (kWh) used per time band
    Unit rate (cent per kWh)
    Amount charged per band
    A subtotal is displayed before additional charges are applied.

  1. Charges, taxes and discounts
    Here you’ll find:
    The standing charge, which covers fixed costs for providing your supply.
    The PSO Levy, supporting renewable energy generation in Ireland.
    Any discounts applied. If you receive a unit rate discount, it's applied separately to the standard unit rate used to calculate your energy charges. Where applicable, the value of the discount will be listed in this section.
    VAT, shown separately before the final total.

  1. Adjustments
    This section shows any credits or corrections.

  1. Previous bill, payments and total
    This is your total amount due, including all charges, taxes, and discounts.
    This section shows any balance brought forward from your previous bill and any payments we've received since then. We apply those payments to your account before calculating your new total amount due. If a bill was delayed, a previous balance may appear on your latest bill and could be shown as overdue until it's updated with recent payments. 

Meter reads and consumption

  1. Your smart meter reads
    This section provides a detailed breakdown of your smart meter readings and electricity usage.
    You’ll see your readings split by Day, Night, and Peak time bands, showing:

    The last bill and current bill readings
    The total kWh used in each time band

    The time intervals for each band:
    Day: 8am–5pm / 7pm–11pm
    Night: 11pm–8am
    Peak: 5pm–7pm

    Readings may be:
    A – actual reading taken from your smart meter
    C – customer reading you’ve provided
    E – estimated reading from ESB Networks

Microgeneration

If you're a microgeneration customer, payments will appear as a credit on your electricity bill with the description Microgen Export Total. Details of how your microgen payment was calculated can be found in your Exported Electricity Self-Billing Invoice, which will accompany your bill.  For more information, see our microgeneration FAQs.

Please note:

  • If you want to view and download your bill see How to view and download my bill online?
  • If you submit your own reads, they must be accepted by ESB Networks to appear on your next bill.
  • This graph compares your electricity usage (kWh) during this billing period with your previous year’s consumption and the average residential customer (where data is available for 12+ months).
