Why is Bord Gáis Energy increasing prices?

Bord Gáis Energy has announced a price increase for residential electricity and gas customers, effective from 9 October 2026. The changes are in response to sustained increases in the cost of supplying energy including higher network charges, continued volatility in wholesale energy markets and broader inflationary pressures.

Increases in gas and electricity unit rates and standing charges will result in a typical residential electricity customer’s bill increasing by 8.8%, or €14.75 per month* and the typical residential gas customer’s bill increasing by 9.3%, or €11.67 per month*. A typical dual fuel household bill will increase by 9.1%, or €26.42 per month^.

*These figures are based on a typical annual consumption of 4,200 kWh for electricity and 11,000 kWh for gas (as defined by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities) and Bord Gáis Energy’s standard Urban 24-hour electricity tariff and standard gas tariff. 

 ^The PSO levy is to reduce to €0.51 (excl. VAT) per month from 1 October 2026. This has been reflected in the above calculations for electricity bills.
