Bord Gáis Energy signs multi-million euro contract with Bausch + Lomb

New CHP project to save Bausch + Lomb up to €1m per year in energy costs

Bausch + Lomb has signed a two-year electricity and gas deal with Bord Gáis Energy, worth several million euros over this period.

Bord Gáis Energy has also supported the development of a state of the art 3.3MW Combined Heat & Power unit (CHP) at the pharmaceutical manufacturer’s Waterford facility, which is predicted to save the company up to €1m per year on energy costs.

Bausch + Lomb employs approximately 1,250 people in Ireland and is currently undergoing a significant expansion, with plans to hire an additional 150 staff. To support this business growth, and improve energy efficiency, the team at Bord Gáis Energy assisted with the installation of a new CHP which allows Bausch + Lomb to generate up to 70% of its electricity and 90% of its thermal needs for the site.

The CHP unit has been running since May 2016 and Bord Gáis Energy is now working with management on the measurement and verification of the CHP project. It is estimated that the new CHP unit will save the company over €1m in gas and electricity costs every year. Bord Gáis Energy is also developing carbon reduction objectives for Bausch + Lomb for the next two years and will provide funding, advice and evaluation for future projects.

Derek O’Connor, Facilities Engineering Manager with Bausch + Lomb said, "As an expanding company, we are always looking for ways to reduce our energy costs and our carbon footprint. We’ve been working with the Bord Gáis Energy team for many years now and the team really understands our business. Our account manager works closely with us to ensure we’re getting the best possible value from our energy supply and the energy efficiency team’s advice and support in the development of the CHP was invaluable. We’re looking forward to seeing the long term benefits of the project and to introducing more successful energy efficiency measures over the coming years."

John Smith, Key Account Manager with Bord Gáis Energy said, 'We're committed to providing our business customers with the best value possible, whether that’s through competitive energy supply rates or tailored energy efficiency support and funding. Energy efficiency projects not only help businesses reduce their carbon footprint, but can also improve their bottom line. It’s great to see that Bausch + Lomb is already realising significant savings through the CHP project, and I’ve no doubt will do for many years to come."

Bausch + Lomb has been a Bord Gáis Energy gas customer since 2014. In addition to implementing energy efficiency projects, the key account manager constantly works with the executive management to ensure they are getting the best possible value from their energy supply.

Bord Gáis Energy runs an Energy Efficiency Partnership Scheme, which helps Irish businesses realise sustainable reductions in energy costs. Both Bord Gáis Energy customers and non-customers can apply for financial support towards the capital cost of their energy efficiency projects. In addition to funding, Bord Gáis Energy also offers a range of services and supports such as LED lighting solutions, Energy Audits and Employee Energy Awareness schemes.
