Understanding rates and charges

Understanding your business electricity bill can empower you to make informed decisions about your energy usage. Let's break down the key components – rates, tariff types and other charges – to shed light on what you're paying for.

This is the cost of delivering energy to your meter, which can vary depending on your meter type.

  • Day/Night meters: You'll see separate rates for daytime and night time usage.
  • 24-hour meters: A flat rate for all your usage, regardless of when you use it.
  • Smart meters: These meters offer the most detailed breakdown, with three rates: day, night, and peak (typically the highest cost period).

Your tariff type is defined by your energy needs and meter type. General Purpose 24 hour is the most common tariff type, with one rate for all energy used based on meter reads.

Larger businesses may have quarter-hour meters which share electricity consumption across multiple rates every 15 minutes.

Pass-through costs are fees paid to companies that maintain and operate the electricity network e.g. Eirgrid. These will appear as a separate line item on your bill, in addition to your energy costs.

More details on these costs can be found here.

Finding the right business electricity plan

Factors to consider:

  • Meter type and energy usage – We'll offer you the right tariff for your meter. Consider your core business and operating hours and choose the tariff that suits your needs.
  • Fully Fixed vs Fixed – We can offer flexibility within our fully fixed and fixed term contracts, allowing you to pick a plan that's best for your business.
  • Variable – A no-commitment variable plan may be what works best for you. You'll always have the option to fix with us at a later date.

Frequently asked questions about business electricity

Fixed tariffs provide a constant rate for electricity during the contract term, offering budget stability. Variable tariffs, however, fluctuate with the wholesale market prices, potentially lowering costs when market rates drop.

Review your current contract for any termination fees, compare available plans, and consider both your energy needs and budget. Switching can offer cost savings and better align with your business goals.

The actual switch is seamless and won’t disrupt your electricity supply. However, choosing a plan that fits your business needs can significantly affect operational costs.
