Irish Sign Language (ISL) Information

Irish Sign Language (ISL) is the first or preferred language of around 5,000 deaf people in Ireland.

Irish Sign Language (ISL) is a complete language and is the first or preferred language of around 5,000 deaf people in Ireland. In 2017, the Irish Sign Language Act was passed, recognising ISL as a language.

Bord Gáis Energy recognises that Irish Sign Language (ISL) is an official language, and people are welcome to contact us if they wish to communicate through ISL. We'll engage with ISL interpreters, on behalf of our customers, with the normal customer validation checks in place. There's no requirement for prior acknowledgement of the engagement and the call will be treated like any other being made to us, with full co-operation of our customer care team.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 do not prevent the use of Irish Sign Language (ISL) interpreters or similar services for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing when interacting with service providers. The Data Protection Commission (DPC) explicitly states that these services, including sign language interpreters, are permissible.

Our accessibility team are here to support any issues or concerns you may have using ISL services. You can contact the accessibility team directly at customercare@bordgais.ie.
