What is the PSO Levy?
The PSO levy is a government levy that’s charged to all electricity customers in Ireland.
The Public Service Obligation (PSO) Levy is a government mandated levy which supports the generation of electricity from sustainable, renewable and indigenous sources. It’s charged to all electricity customers in Ireland.
The proceeds of the levy are used to recoup the additional costs incurred by the ESB and other suppliers.
For the 2024/25 period, the PSO levy is €3.23 per month (excl. VAT). This applies customer's bills from 1 October 2024.
How is the PSO levy added to my bill?
If you're with Bord Gáis Energy at the end of the month, you'll see a PSO (Public Service Obligation) charge on your bill for that month.
If you switch to a new supplier before the end of the month, Bord Gáis Energy won’t charge you for PSO — your new supplier will include the full monthly PSO charge, even if you were only with them for part of the month. If you join Bord Gáis Energy during the month, we’ll apply the full PSO charge for that month. This balances out, as your previous supplier won’t charge you PSO if you left before the end of the month.
