Panda Power FAQs - Supplier of Last Resort

Frequently Asked Questions

We've developed some detailed frequently asked questions (FAQs) which should answer any questions you have.

A “Supplier of Last Resort” is appointed by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) when a gas supplier makes an unplanned exit from the market.

Bord Gáis Energy was appointed by the CRU to act as a Supplier of Last Resort. We took over the supply of gas for Panda Power‘s former customers as of 30 September 2022. All of Panda Power‘s customers’ details were transferred to us by the Gas Point Registration Office (a division of Gas Networks Ireland) under the CRU’s Supplier of Last Resort Direction.

Don’t worry - although your supplier has changed, your gas supply hasn’t been affected. As Supplier of Last Resort, we've your name, address and GPRN details on our system and we'll continue to supply your gas as normal.

We sent you a letter with your GPRN and your new account number on it, which will confirm your move to Bord Gáis Energy.

You can move to another supplier after 29 December 2022 with no penalty, but we hope that you’ll choose to stay with us.

Bord Gáis Energy is the CRU-appointed Supplier of Last Resort for the Irish gas market. This means that we'll supply you with gas now that Panda Power is no longer operating in the market.

As per the CRU Supplier of Last Resort process, you can switch to another supplier from 29 December 2022 with no penalty, but we hope that you’ll choose to stay with us.

As per the CRU’s Supplier of Last Resort process, you’ll remain a Bord Gáis Energy gas customer until at least 29 December 2022.

You won’t be charged an early exit fee for leaving after this date, but we hope that you’ll choose to stay with us.

No – your gas supply will not be disconnected because of Panda Power exiting the market. Bord Gáis Energy will continue to supply your gas and there will be no interruption to your gas supply.

Under the ‘Supplier of Last Resort’ regulations put in place by the CRU, Bord Gáis Energy has no responsibility for returning any credit that a customer may have in their account with Panda Power. We’ve not received any information from Panda Power or the GPRO in relation to any credit or debt on your account, and therefore we’re unable to advise you on this.

You should contact Panda Power to discuss the reimbursement of any credit you may be owed.

Panda Power will manage any debt repayments owed to them. Bord Gáis Energy has no responsibility for this under the ‘Supplier of Last Resort’ process put in place by the CRU. We’ve not received any information from Panda Power or the GPRO in relation to any credit or debt on your account, and therefore we’re unable to advise you on this.

Panda Power will send you a final bill for energy consumed up to the date when Panda Power ceased trading. You should pay this bill.

We received an estimated start read from Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) when your account was switched from Panda Power. GNI issue an estimated read to all customers impacted by a Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) event. This is the same estimated read value used on your final bill with Panda Power.

On your first bill, the original estimated switch read will be listed first. All other reads which have been provided and verified by GNI will be listed on your bill after this estimate read.

We encourage customers to submit regular meter readings online via your online account. For more information, click here.

For more information, please refer to our Handling Customer Complaints Code of Practice.

Unfortunately, details such as customer complaints were not transferred to us by your previous supplier under the Supplier of Last Resort process. We would recommend contacting Panda Power directly about complaints raised to them.

You can pay your bill by one of the methods listed here. These methods are also listed on the back of your bill.

The easiest and most convenient way to pay is by Direct Debit, and you’ll receive a 2% discount on your bill. Once you’ve registered for an online account, you can set up your Direct Debit with us by going to the ‘Payments’ tab on your account dashboard.

With every billing period, there are fixed costs attached. These include standing charges, carbon tax and VAT. The read for your bill may also be different to the initial estimated read provided by GNI.

If you registered for gas special services with your previous supplier, we’ll need you to re-register with us. This is to ensure your details are accurate and your requirements are noted.

We've been notified by Gas Networks Ireland if you're on the special services register, so we’ll send you a Bord Gáis Energy registration form to complete and return to us. Alternatively, you can fill in our online vulnerable customer registration form which might be easier for you.
