What is the National Energy Efficiency Obligation Scheme?
This scheme is an EU directive for energy suppliers to ensure that they deliver energy savings.
The Energy Efficiency Obligation Scheme (EEOS) is a European Union directive that applies in Ireland. It requires energy suppliers and distributors to support energy efficiency improvements in homes, businesses and communities across the country.
In Ireland, the scheme is administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, SEAI, and has been in place since 2014.
Bord Gáis Energy delivers energy savings under EEOS through initiatives such as the installation of Hive Active Heating and by offering One Stop Shop services.
When an energy efficiency action takes place, for example a home retrofit, the energy savings from that action are calculated and independently verified. Once approved, these savings are recorded as energy credits. Energy suppliers use these credits to demonstrate that they have met their legal EEOS targets.
