From site survey to scheduled installation
Before you even reach solar install day, a lot has already happened behind the scenes.
Every solar PV system starts with a detailed site survey. This ensures your system is designed specifically for your home and performs efficiently in Irish weather conditions.
This includes:
- Roof orientation and angle
- Shading from nearby objects
- Structural condition
- Your energy usage patterns
We look at your historic electricity use, your daytime versus evening demand, and whether you’re planning for things like EV charging or battery storage.
Alongside this, key steps are completed:
- SEAI grant application (approved before installation)
- ESB Networks NC6 notification
- Smart meter preparation
Panels are a 25+ year asset, so the roof beneath should be ready for that lifetime. You’ll be guided through this by experienced professionals, some of which you’ll meet on our solar experts page.
What to do before solar install day
In the days leading up to your installation, preparation is simple. You’ll typically:
- Ensure access to attic and electrical areas
- Clear space for installers and equipment
- Confirm timing and expectations
This helps your solar install day run smoothly from the moment the crew arrives.
Solar install day: what happens step by step

Understanding what to expect on solar install day makes a big difference. The process is structured, efficient, and handled by trained professionals. We usually arrive between 8 and 9 in the morning. We introduce the solar install team, confirm the plan, and agree on the best time for any short power-off.
Arrival and site preparation
The team will:
- Introduce themselves and walk through the plan
- Confirm inverter location and cable routes
- Set up safety equipment and work areas
Safety checks and risk assessments are always completed first.
Roof installation: Mounting and panel placement

This is the most visible part of solar install day.
Installing the mounting system
Brackets are fixed securely to your roof structure, forming the base for your panels. They are designed to:
- Prevent leaks
- Withstand Irish weather
- Support long-term performance
Positioning the panels
Panels are aligned carefully to maximise sunlight exposure. South-facing is ideal, but east-west can work very well too.
Securing the panels
Specialised clamps are used to secure panels firmly in place, ensuring durability and safety.
Electrical installation: Bringing your solar system to life
As roof work wraps up, attention turns to the electrical system. This is where everything comes together - connecting the system safely into your home.
Wiring and inverter installation

Cables carry electricity from your panels to the inverter, which converts it into usable power. The inverter is installed in a practical location such as:
- A garage
- A utility space
- Externally (lane, side of house or back of house)
One of the most important things is keeping the inverter in a cool, accessible location.
Connecting to your home
Your solar system is connected to your fuse board, allowing solar electricity to power your home.
Optional additions

Depending on your system, installers may also integrate:
- Battery storage
- EV charging
Testing, commissioning and handover

This is the final stage of solar install day. We'll run through some checks and give you a run through of the system.
Powering up your system
Once installed, your system is switched on. For me, turning on the system and seeing live generation never gets old!
Performance checks
All Bord Gáis Energy installers verify:
- System output
- Electrical safety
- Overall performance
App set up and demonstration
You’ll be shown how to monitor your system in real time. We set up your app and show you exactly how to track performance to ensure you know you're getting the most out of your new solar panel system.
Documentation and certification
Once we've wrapped up, you’ll receive:
- Electrical certification
- Warranty details
- Support contacts
How long does solar installation take?
Most domestic installs are completed in one to two days on site, while the overall journey takes a few weeks including approvals. Naturally, with jobs like this weather can be a factor, but typically we see most jobs take one to two days.
Will there be disruption on solar install day?
Disruption is minimal and short-lived. You may experience some noise from roof work, a short power interruption between 30 to 60 minutes and we'll need access to attic or electrical areas. For any power outages, we'll agree power-off times with you in advance.
Costs, grants and savings in Ireland
A typical domestic system ranges from €6,000 to €16,000 before grants, of which there are plenty to look for. You could get an SEAI grant up to €1,800, 0% VAT on installation and Clean Export Guarantee payments too. Keen to learn more about government grants and your eligibility? Get a full breakdown of all home energy upgrade grants.
In terms of savings, a well-sited 4 kWp system can generate around 3,500 to 4,000 kWh per year. Learn more on the solar PV installation page.
Do solar panels work well in Ireland?
Yes, very well. Panels generate electricity from daylight, not just direct sunshine. There's a common myth that Ireland doesn't have enough sun for solar, but that's now how power is generated.
Solar panels will generate power for your home on cloudy days, last 25 to 30 years and require minimal maintenance.
What happens after solar install day?
After your installation is complete, you'll be connected to the ESB network. Your system is connected and your smart meter tracks export. You'll need to submit your final paperwork for SEAI grant completion and now be able to track performance through the app that we help you get set up with. Our dedicated solar hub is a useful resource for ongoing support.
