Smart Dynamic Terms and Conditions

Smart Tariffs Terms and Conditions of Tariff Smart Dynamic

Residential Customers June 2026

1) These are Bord Gáis Energy’s terms and conditions for our Smart Dynamic Tariff. These terms and conditions set out the details of this tariff and should be read in conjunction with our Electricity Smart Metering Terms and Conditions (Fixed Term or no Fixed Term) or our Dual Fuel Terms and Conditions with Electricity Smart Metering (whichever is applicable to the offer you have agreed to). These can be found at: Service and supply Terms and Conditions | Bord Gáis Energy

2) Our Smart Dynamic Tariff is a tariff which tracks half-hourly wholesale market prices, specifically the “Day-Ahead Market” (DAM) for electricity. This means that you will be charged a different price for electricity for each half hour of the day. There is currently a cap of €0.50 per kWh per half hour set by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities. You will not be charged above this level on the dynamic unit rate. This cap may be changed from time to time.

3) The Smart Dynamic Tariff unit rate is made up of two components:-

  • a. the “dynamic unit rate” (with a different unit rate for each half-hour of the day). The dynamic unit rate is based on electricity wholesale market prices set each day for 11p.m. that evening to 11 p.m. the next day. This is subject to a cap (currently €0.50/ kWh).
  • b. the “base unit rate” (same unit rate across all half-hours). The base unit rate still applies even if the dynamic unit rate has gone above the cap as set out in clause 3a).

4) The Smart Dynamic Tariff is an online-only product with paperless billing and communications due to the nature of the product. With this product you must provide us with an email address and register for an online account via our website. You must be able to receive frequent pricing emails and be able to check your online account. You must keep your email address accurate and up to date and be able to easily log into your online account with this product.

5) We will send you emails for:-

  • a. Daily Prices – these will be sent to you by 2pm and will set out the half-hourly prices for the next day (11pm to 11pm). If for any reason you do not receive this email (for example, when you first sign-up to this tariff there may be a delay in receiving your first email), then you can visit https://www.bordgaisenergy.ie/dailypricing for the latest prices and for the last seven days’ prices. It is your responsibility to check these day ahead prices.
  • b. High Price Alerts – these will be sent to you if any half-hourly wholesale price goes above a certain level. You can set this level yourself or use our default level. If you choose our default level we may change this from time to time depending on wholesale prices and you will be automatically moved onto it. You can change your High Price Alert level at any time in your online account.

6) The Smart Dynamic Tariff is a financially risky product as there is no certainty on the dynamic unit rate as it tracks wholesale electricity prices. To avoid being charged high prices at certain half hours, you must be willing to review the daily prices in advance and adapt your electricity usage downwards at those times. Bord Gáis Energy Limited cannot accept responsibility for any unexpected high costs / bills as a result of this tariff.

7) The Smart Dynamic Tariff may not be suitable for some customers as you must be able to easily reduce your electricity usage at times of high prices. Therefore, this tariff may not be suitable for vulnerable customers and those who are critically dependent on electricity.

8) The Smart Dynamic Tariff also includes a Standing Charge and is subject to a PSO levy, VAT and any other governmental / industry charge that may be introduced. Your bill will include the dynamic unit rate which may be positive or negative, the base unit rate, any applicable standing charges, PSO levy, VAT and any other taxes/ charges that may be introduced.

9) We will show one dynamic unit rate on your monthly bill for information purposes. This is the average price per unit of consumption based on each half hourly dynamic unit cost over the billing period and dependent on your pattern of consumption. You will still be charged a different price at an individual half hour level. For each half hour, your electricity consumption (in kWh) is multiplied by the dynamic unit cost (as quoted by the wholesale Day-Ahead market) that applies at that time to work out the cost for that half hour.

All of these half hourly costs are then added together for the billing period. That total dynamic cost is divided by your total electricity consumption to give an average price, called the dynamic unit rate, which is shown on your bill. In addition to this dynamic cost, the total base cost applies based on a base unit rate applies to the same total electricity consumption in the billing period. The data to perform this calculation can be found on your online account (see clause 14 below).

10) If you choose one of our Smart Dynamic Tariff offers, there will be no discount on the unit rate. If you choose a Dual Fuel product with the Smart Dynamic Tariff and our gas tariff, we may offer a discount on the gas unit rate. You can decide to move to one of our other Smart Plans during the course of your fixed term dual fuel contract. You will not lose the discount you receive on the gas unit rate if you decide to do this.

11) The current prices for the Smart Dynamic Tariff can be viewed on our website at: Our Tariffs & Prices | Bord Gáis Energy (bordgaisenergy.ie).

12) With the Smart Dynamic Tariff, electricity consumption data will be collected daily in half hourly intervals (half hourly consumption data) and sent to ESB Networks.

13) The meter configuration for this Tariff is MCC12 (as displayed on your Smart Meter bill). Half hourly consumption data may be provided to us by ESB Networks with this tariff. Where half hourly consumption data is available to us, we can provide a breakdown of this data to you. This gives you a breakdown of your electricity usage for every half hour of the day.

14) You can access up to 24 months of your historic half hourly consumption data through our website via your online account which is available via our website at www.bordgaisenergy.ie. You must have an online account with us to use this product and service. The amount of half hourly consumption data will be less if you joined us in the last 24 months and will be available for however long you have been with us.

This half hourly consumption data can be downloaded to your own electronic device. We will regularly refresh this so it is accurate and up to date. Export data for any exports you make to the grid via solar panels (for example) can also be accessed on the same basis, where applicable and if available.

15) You can access a Billing Downloadable File in your online account. This will contain consumption data as set out above (up to 36 months) and will also contain cost information which can be used to calculate your bill. The cost information in this file will allow you to multiply the DAM price per half-hour by your half-hourly consumption, sum this up over a monthly billing period and work out the average cost per unit as it appears on your bill (as mentioned in 9) above), together with the base charge and the standing charge.

16) Customers on this tariff will be billed monthly. You can choose a billing day on any day between 1 – 28 of the month.

17) Our preferred method of payment is by Direct Debit. Your direct debit will be taken 14 days after the billing date. With this tariff, there is no discount for paying by Direct Debit.

18) Paperless Billing is mandatory for the Smart Dynamic tariff due to the nature of this tariff which charges you different prices every half-hour of the day and the fact that you must maintain an online account to get access to up-to-date daily prices. With this tariff, there is no discount for choosing a paperless bill.

19) We may change the base unit rate and standing charge for the Smart Dynamic tariff with 30 days advance notice. The price change will take effect from midnight on the effective date stated in the price change notice. This is in accordance with our Electricity Smart Metering Terms and Conditions (Fixed Term or no Fixed Term) or our Dual Fuel Terms and Conditions with Electricity Smart Metering (whichever is applicable to the offer you have agreed to).
