Advantages of installing a heat pump

Heat pumps are cheaper than direct electric heaters, oil boilers and natural gas with the lowest running costs on the market. They are incredibly efficient and this brings greater long-term energy savings. Despite the fact that the initial cost of a groundwater heat pump can be high, this environment-friendly investment can help you save up in the long run.

Heat pumps produce no on-site carbon emissions, unlike conventional boiler-based heaters. When paired with renewable energy sources like solar PV panels, heat pumps are completely emissions-free. This means that heat pumps are effective in reducing your home’s carbon footprint.

Heat pumps can have a long life span of up to 50 years and the average lifespan is about 14 to 15 years. Heat pumps are exceptionally reliable and steady and are also safer than combustion-based heating systems.

Installing a heat pump can take your home to a new level of comfort, providing you with consistent heating and, depending on the design, cooling.

Heat pumps increase your property value. A well-designed heat pump system installed within a smart home and maintained by a trusted, professional home energy specialist will increase the sale value of your home and other properties.

Other advantages include; they serve both heating and cooling functions, saves space because they don’t require fuel storage, requires no planning permission, and they are silent and unobtrusive.

Is it the right choice for you?

Heat pumps are a great option for homeowners who want a cost-effective heating solution, but they might not be the ideal option for every home.

You may need to upgrade your insulation before going ahead with any installation. Air-source heat pumps are only beneficial to well-insulated homes.

You should also consider any potential disturbance to your home. Installation can mean having to significantly modify your pipework and radiators.

How do they work?

A heat pump is a device that controls your home’s climate by distributing the heat that is already available in the air.  In the winter, it transfers heat from the outside environment to inside your home, providing warmth and comfort. In the summer, depending on your system design, the heat pump extracts the heat inside your home and moves it outside. A heat pump is a smart and clean way to heat, cool, purify, and dehumidify your home.

Heat pumps are part of a group of technologies that include HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning). These devices transfer heat and warmth from one place to another.

The heat pump is configured in a way that you can control the levels of warmth around your home. This process can work in reverse whereby a heat pump can heat or cool the house as desired.

Your heat pump should be serviced annually to ensure optimal performance and extend its lifetime. For more information, read our comprehensive Heat Pump Guide.

Frequently asked questions about heat pump installation

When a heat pump is installed, the electricity use in your home will increase, and your electricity bill may increase as a result. A heat pump is powered by electricity, but the amount it produces is 3 or 4 times greater than the amount it uses.

However, a heat pump should eliminate the need for oil or gas to heat your home, which will remove these associated costs completely. A properly installed heat pump is more efficient than a gas boiler and other fossil fuels, so you'll save money on heating bills.

Heat pumps can have different efficiencies at different times of the year. Factors such as size of your home, how well it's insulated, and how much hot water you use will all determine the effectiveness of your heat pump. For more information on heat pumps, take a look at our Heat Pump Guide.

Your heat pump should be serviced annually to ensure optimal performance and extend its lifetime. If your energy costs are considerably higher, this may be due to a lack of maintenance, or potentially a fault within the system.
