Frequently asked questions about EV plans and chargers

Find answers to the most common queries about your EV.

EV smart plans are home energy plans which offer customers lower electricity rates when they charge their electric vehicle overnight.

Signing up to an EV plan can save you money. If you've a smart meter, we’ll give you a lower price for the electricity you use at night between 2am and 5am, so you can charge your EV for less at these times.

Our EV plans can help you to be kinder to the environment and support Ireland’s acceleration to a greener, cleaner future.

If you don’t have an EV charger, you can still sign up for an EV plan. However, you'll get the most benefit out of this plan if you own and charge your electric car at home.

Please note:

  • You must have a smart meter to avail of our EV plans.
  • Pay As You Go customers are not eligible for EV plans.
  • Level Pay is not available as a payment method for EV plans.

EV chargers offer different charging speeds depending on the charger’s capacity.

Most residential EV chargers deliver enough to charger your car fully overnight.

  • A  7kW EV charger will give you approximately 50 km of range per hour.
  • An EV with a 60kWh battery capacity may take up to nine hours to charge from empty to full.

However, different EVs will charge at a different rate using the same charger. Some EV models, such as some Hybrids, are not capable of availing of the full throughput from a charge point but will still charge at a rate suitable for the vehicle.

If you’ve a smart meter installed, our EV plan will give you cheaper rates between 2am - 5am, so you’ll save money if you charge your EV during this time.

The exact cost depends on your driving needs, car efficiency, and how many miles you drive.

It's more cost effective to drive an EV (electric vehicle) than a fuel-based car. The exact cost depends on your driving needs, car efficiency, and how many miles you drive.

On average, an EV owner charges their EV at home approximately 80% of the time which may add up to 3,000 kWh or more to your electricity bill. If you’re driving your EV 17,500 km per year and sign up to our Smart EV plan, it’ll cost you approximately €180 annually (excluding your household electricity bills), i.e. approximately €1 per 100kms.
