Closing an account
How to close your Bord Gáis Energy account
Switching to another supplier
You don’t need to contact us. Just sign up with a new supplier, and they’ll handle the switch.
- Switching takes up to 14 days, and your supply won’t be interrupted.
- Your Bord Gáis Energy account closes automatically after switching.
- If you leave before your contract ends, a €50 early exit fee applies. How can I view my contract end date?
- You’ll get your final bill within 14 days. Provide a meter reading to your new supplier to ensure accurate billing. If your account is in credit, see How can I get a refund if my account is in credit?
- If you require copies of your recent bills, please download these from your online account before closing your Bord Gáis Energy account, as they may not be available after you close your account. Due to data protection laws, we only retain personal information for as long as you have an account with us.
Moving home or selling

Selling your property
If you're selling your property, contact us on the day the sale closes and we'll close your account. We can only close your account once the property sale is complete. Until then, you're still responsible for any bills—even if the house is vacant.
If you're moving home and can't close your old account yet (for example, if you're waiting for your property to be sold), you can still open a new account with us for your new home in the meantime.
Cancelling a recent switch
If you switched to Bord Gáis Energy within the last 14 days (or 30 days via a doorstep agent), complete our online cancellation form here.
Disconnection of supply and locking meter
If you’re renovating, leaving your property vacant for a long time, or getting a heat pump installed and no longer need gas, you may need to disconnect your supply and lock the meter. Contact us to request this.
Important: If you request your meter to be locked, you will no longer be supplied with electricity or gas, depending on the meter type.
You’ll need:
- Your Bord Gáis Energy account number.
- Your gas GPRN and/or electricity MPRN. Learn how to find GPRN/MPRN here
- Forwarding address for your final bill.
Once we receive your request, we’ll send it to ESB Networks (electricity disconnections) or Gas Networks Ireland (gas disconnections).
If the account isn't in your name
I’m a landlord, and my tenant is moving out.
- Open a new account in your name until you have a new tenant. This is important to avoid disconnection. You can sign up online here or contact us.
My housemate is moving out, but I want to take over the account.
- Open a new account in your name. (Accounts can't be transferred). You can sign up online here.
A loved one has passed away, and I need to close their account.
- If you need to close the account of a deceased customer, contact our dedicated Bereavement Support team for assistance. Click here for more information on the bereavement process and how to contact the team.
